Brit girls become Ugly Bettys Rather than conforming with the fashion crowd, women are increasingly looking to stand out with their style choices, a new report claims.

Research for Savanna Cider found that 67 per cent of 18 to 35-year-olds want to be seen as different, a phenomenon which the company has dubbed Ugly Betty Syndrome after the hit US TV series.

The TV series won the Best Comedy award at this year's Golden Globe ceremony and sees actress America Ferrera cast as fashion industry misfit Betty Suarez, known for her eccentric dress sense and brightly-coloured clothes.

And the desire to stand out extends to Betty's trademark glasses, it seems, with 32 per cent of men and women in the UK choosing to wear glasses as a fashion accessory, Easier.com reports.

Meanwhile, 47 per cent of 1,000 18 to 35-year-old women interviewed said that they would prefer not to buy a fashion item that was currently advertised on TV or in the press, for fear of being seen as one of the crowd.

Marketing director of Savanna Cider Nigel Bruce said: "Bespectacled, poncho wearing young women are not out of fashion because the look they've adopted has never really been in fashion.

"It's more about rebelling against convention and against glossy designer fashions or high street conformity that's so cheaply available now."
